Jadwiga Lipińska (29 XI 1932 – 4 X 2009)

12 X 2009

On Sunday, October the 4th, Prof. Dr. Jadwiga Lipińska, eminent Egyptologist, passed away.

In 1958, after graduation from the Warsaw University, Professor Dr. Jadwiga Lipińska started to work in the Ancient Art Gallery of the National Museum in Warsaw. The whole professional activity of Professor Lipińska was connected with the Museum. She consecutively occupied all the museum hierarchy posts, from an assistant to the Gallery Curator (in 1991, the post which she kept till her retirement in 2000). For many years she was an active member of CIPEG, the Egyptological section of ICOM. In 1991 she was granted the title of Professor of Humanities.

For almost forty years she took part in the research program of the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology of the Warsaw University in Cairo. She belonged to a group of the best cooperators of the late Prof. Dr. Kazimierz Michałowski, the founder of the Centre, the group which had been chosen and created by the professor.

Her field experience began with participation in the excavations at Tell Atrib (1960). In the next year, during the first season of Polish activity in the Hatshepsut Temple at Deir el-Bahari, Professor Lipińska made her valuable contribution in one of our greatest achievements – the discovery of an unknown temple of Tuthmosis III. The architecture of the temple was the subject of her habilitation thesis. Three years later (1964/65 season) she was appointed the field director of the excavations at Deir el-Bahari.

Apart from work in Egypt (Tell Atrib – 1960, ´63, ´65; Western Thebes – since 1961; Alexandria – 1963), Professor Lipińska took part in the excavations in the Sudan (Faras – 1962/63) and in Syria (1965). Since that time she shared her activities between three main spheres of the study of Egyptian civilization, those of the field activity, teaching and museum collections.

As an assistant of Prof. Michałowski she was engaged very much in the teaching program at the Warsaw University. For many Polish, and not only Polish, Egyptologists, the lectures and classes of Professor Lipińska were the source of their basic knowledge of Egyptian art, topography and archaeology, etc. For years, generations of young Egyptologists were shaped by her tutorship in Egyptian archaeology, which, at the beginning, was the only one of this type in Poland. Many students of the Warsaw University, the Theological Academy in Warsaw and the University in Łódź profited much from Professor Lipińska´s sharp criticism while adjusting and commenting their exercises, papers and MA theses.

In 1978 Professor Lipińska became the director of the mission of the Tuthmosis III Temple at Deir el-Bahari. Studies on this temple and whole range of problems connected with that time and this area were one of the main fields of her scientific activity. She directed the mission till 1996 but her interest and involvement in the Tuthmosis III Temple never stopped.

Her scientific output exceeds hundred positions. Also the popular scientific articles and books she wrote belong to main sources of information for many students and enthusiasts of Egyptian art, religion and monuments in Poland. Sztuka egipska (Egyptian Art), Mitologia starożytnego Egiptu (Ancient Egyptian Mythology, with the late M. Marciniak), Cywilizacja miedzi  i kamienia (The Civilisation of Copper and Stone, with the late W. Koziński), Tajemnice papirusów(Mysteries of papyri), W cieniu piramid (In the shadow of pyramids) or 500 zagadek o starożytnym Egipcie (500 Riddles about Ancient Egypt) are very popular and up to date.
